- The London Eye is not a Ferris wheel. It’s the world’s tallest cantilevered observation wheel
- On average the London Eye receives more visitors per year than the Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramids of Giza
- The London Eye can carry 800 people each rotation, which is comparable to 11 London red double decker buses
- Capsules travel at a leisurely pace of 26cm per second, which is twice as fast as a tortoise sprinting
- There are 32 capsules (one for each London borough). Each one weighs 10 tonnes and can carry 25 passengers. The capsules are air-conditioned and seats are provided, although passengers are able to walk around.
- Despite there only being 32 capsules, for superstitious reasons they are numbered 1 – 33. For good luck number 13 is left out
- At 135m high, the London Eye is one of the tallest buildings in the city.
The London Eye was officially opened on 31 December 1999 by then Prime Minister Tony Blair.
From the top of the London Eye you can see things about 25 miles away.
So far, The Eye has had four names as follows:
- Millennium Wheel (pre-2000 launch)
- British Airways London Eye (Launch in 2000 to 2008)
- Merlin Entertainments London Eye (2008 to 2011)
- EDF Energy London Eye (2011 onwards)
- Coca Cola London Eye (2015 onwards)
